DETERMINATION OF BODY MASS INDEX AMONG STAFF AND STUDENTS OF UMARU ALI SHINKAFI POLYTECHNIC SOKOTO

ABSTRACT
Obesity is a major health problem and there is increasing trend of overweight and obese adults and children around the world. Therefore the aim of this paper is to determine the prevalence of overweightness and obesity using body mass index among adult staff and students of Ummaru Ali Shinkafi Polythnic, Sokoto. Body mass index (BMI) of two hundred (200) students and staffs of Umaru Ali Shinkafi polytechnic sokoto were randomly taken, 100 males, 100 females each. Their weight and height were measured with weight scale and meter rule. The body mass index of were determined according to WHO, 2015. The prevalence of overweightness and obesity were 15% and 39% respectively. Females were more obese than the males and it also observed that people between the age of 40-60 recorded high percentage of obese than other age groups. The prevalence of overweight and obese is of epidemic population and there is need to pay closer attention to converting this health disorder.
