THE EFFECTS OF BANDITRY ACTIVITIES ON GIRL CHILD EDUCATION IN
SOKOTO SOUTH SENATORIAL ZONE, SOKOTO STATE NIGERIA

Banditry is among the critical forms of insecurity that have affected the Northwest geopolitical zone for the past few years. Banditry has affected almost all aspects of human endeavor, including Girl Child Education in Northern Nigeria. This study examined the effects of insurgency/Banditry on Girl Child Education in the Southern Senatorial Zone of Sokoto State. It highlighted the recent efforts made by the Government and Non-governmental organizations in the areas affected by the insurgency and Banditry to improve access to Girl Child Education. The sample for the study was 120 teachers of primary and secondary schools, selected based on ten teachers from each of the 12 community schools selected across the most affected LGAs in Southern Senatorial Zone in Sokoto state, namely: Kebbe, Shagari and Tureta LGAs. The instrument for data collection was a 20-item questionnaire titled: Effect of Insurgency on Girl Child Education Questionnaires (EIGCEQ). The research questions were formulated, and data collected were converted to mean, standard deviation and used to answer the research questions. Therefore, It was recommended that the Sokoto State Government show higher commitment to mobilizing the security agencies to end the insurgency in Sokoto Southern Zone and provide adequate security in schools. It was also recommended that religious/ traditional leaders and Community-Based Organizations actively encourage girls' Education in their respective communities.
