Findings in the paper suggest that improvements should be made with regards to the issue of funding, regulations, infrastructural development as well as other support institutions. The paper notes the positive relationship between vocational education and economic development in general. In order to address the issues raised in this paper as clearly as possible the paper is classified into five sections which include the introduction, review of related literature, methodology, analysis of findings, summary, conclusions and recommendations. The pattern of methodology adopted by the paper is content analysis. The paper concludes that vocational education is significantly important in human and economic development and therefore recommends that the sub-sector be strengthened and harnessed in tandem with global best practices through investment in research and development as well as diversified means of adequate funding. Social media afford users the opportunity to interact with one another making it possible to share information, videos and photographic materials. Therefore, the study determines the effect of social media on the Socio-cultural life of students in Tertiary Education in Nigeria. The data collected and used in the analysis of the study were gathered from primary and secondary sources. The primary data came from the two hundred and fifty (250) questionnaires administered to the respondents around the campus. The statistical tools employed include the percentage and pie chart analysis. Based on findings from this work, it was revealed that majority of undergraduate students make use of social media. Furthermore, observations were madethat the use of social media influences the socio-cultural life of undergraduate students. Findings showedthat the use of social media impacts the academic performance of the students of Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro negatively. 227,TACKLING SECURITY AND ECONOMIC CHALLENGES IN NIGERIA: THE ROLE OF MATHEMATICS EDUCATION,,1712014,Kabir Yunusa G.,"The paper examines the performance of students in Mathematics SSCE from 2000-2011 and the carrying capacity of each tertiary institution`s subsector in Nigeria. Admission into the tertiary schools in the country has been examined. Similarly, data on prison inmates from 2007 to 2011 has been provided and analyzed. This is with the aim of establishing a relationship between the SSCE mathematics performance, and admissions into tertiary institutions and its possible consequences on the security and economic challenges of the country. The data were obtained from the Annual Abstract of Statistics (2012) of the National Bureau of Statistics, and extract of similar studies previouslymade. Based on the result of the analysis obtained, the researcher deduced that there is a correlation between the performance of students in mathematics at SSCE level and enrolment into tertiary education level. It was also found that the performance of students in mathematics SSCE from the year 2000-2011 was averagely 40%. Similarly, admissions into tertiary institutions as at 2010 stood at 10%. Additionally, also there was a relationship (r=0.40), although weak, between the performance of students in Mathematics and Prison admissions from 2007-2011. Finally, it was observed that an average of 96% of the prison admissions from 2007-2011 was between the age 16-50year. ",11,2017,0
